A more sustainable and pedestrian-focused transport system for the region will be the focus of discussions next week when Sunshine Coast Council hosts a visit from world-renowned active transport expert Rodney Tolley.

Council’s Integrated Transport Systems portfolio holder, Vivien Griffin, said Dr Tolley will meet with council staff involved in the planning and design of shared spaces for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

“Dr Tolley is a leading authority on active transport, based at the Centre for Alternative and Sustainable Transport, at Staffordshire University in the UK,’’ Councillor Griffin said.

“On Monday and Tuesday he will be sharing best practice examples from around the world regarding the design of sustainable, pedestrian-friendly transport systems.”

Dr Tolley will make a presentation on shared spaces and will take part in site visits at Marcoola, Sunshine Beach and Noosa Junction, which will focus on the technical design of public space.

His visit is supported by TravelSmart Sunshine Coast; council’s innovative travel behaviour change program that encourages and promotes sustainable transport.

Local residents are also encouraged to have their say on the creation of efficient, integrated transport networks across the Coast. Council’s Sustainable Transport Discussion Paper is now available for community comment as part of the extensive Our Place Our Future planning program.

Council encourages everyone to read the paper and provide feedback. For details, visit council’s website or contact council’s customer service centre.
