Sunshine Coast welcomes Pacific Jewel on 50th Anniversary

Passengers from the P&O Pacific Jewel were welcomed into Mooloolaba this morning (Tuesday August 1), and joined celebrations to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Division 4 Councillor John Connolly was on hand to personally welcome the guests as they disembarked at Mooloolaba Wharf.

Passengers from the P&O Pacific Jewel were welcomed into Mooloolaba this morning (Tuesday August 1), and joined celebrations to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Division 4 Councillor John Connolly was on hand to personally welcome the guests as they disembarked at Mooloolaba Wharf.

“It’s great to welcome the passengers to our beautiful region, and on a day that is of such significance to our community – the 50th anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast,” Cr Connolly said.

“The anniversary is a big milestone for our region and one that will be celebrated with a range of community events planned over the coming months.

“We’re happy to be sharing the celebrations with our P&O guests and hope they enjoy the community activities organised for their visit.

“Community markets will be held until 4pm today with live entertainment at the Wharf from 3pm and we’re encouraging locals to head down and join in the fun.”

Visit Sunshine CEO Simon Latchford said it was wonderful to be able to welcome the passengers so warmly to the region.

“Visits like the P&O Pacific Jewel offer a unique experience for passengers to experience the natural beauty offered by the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Latchford said.

“The addition of some community markets and live entertainment will just add to the atmosphere and hopefully encourage them to come back to visit our region again.

“The cruise ship visits are a great boost for the local area with each ship estimated to inject $250,000 into our local economy.”

Another two P&O cruise ships will visit the region this month, with the Pacific Explorer expected tomorrow (Wednesday, August 2) and again on Monday, August 28.

The  Pacific Jewel will return to the Sunshine Coast on Friday December 22 just in time for some Christmas shopping.

Community markets will be held at each cruise ship visit.
