Sunshine Coast get ready for a big weekend of SC50 celebrations
With more than 10 fantastic events planned, it will be a big weekend of celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast.
With more than 10 fantastic events planned, it will be a big weekend of celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast.
Mayor Mark Jamieson welcomed residents to join the party across the region.
“It’s our time to shine – and what a weekend of great activities we have coming up for our 50th Anniversary celebrations,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“It really is one of our biggest weekends of the anniversary year.
“We’ve worked with a wide range of passionate local community groups to plan events and activities that suit all ages and interests.”
Friday’s main event will be the live Today Show Big Birthday Bash at Maroochydore Beach.
Locals are invited to come down and meet Karl, Lisa, Sylvia and Dickie enjoy the festive beach party.
On Saturday, sporting fans and locals are set for a treat with the inaugural Women’s AFL Cup, at Maroochydore Sports Complex, starting at 11.30am.
Maroochydore Roos operations manager Lisa Daldy said the club was excited to host the anniversary game.
“We look forward to welcoming our community to the inaugural Women’s AFL Cup between Maroochydore and the University of Queensland senior teams,” Lisa said.
“It’s sure to be a great day of sporting action.”
The Festival of Community Hall celebrations will be in full swing with five events in local halls throughout the Sunshine Coast.
Mooloolah Hall will host 50 years of Mooloolah Memories on Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday, Country Rocks the Obi Obi Hall, Mapleton Hall will host a Retro Fantastic Day and Live Music night and Belli Hall will host a Retro Old Time Country Dance.
Finally on Sunday, The Musos Event will be held at Eudlo Hall.
The From the Mountains to the Sea Exhibition at the USC Art Gallery will be open to the public on Saturday.
The weekend’s celebrations culminate in the Our Sunshine Coast Anniversary Concert on Sunday at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
More than 500 local performers will pay a musical tribute to the Sunshine Coast. MC Darren Percival will showcase his talents and the winning songs of the Sunshine Coast Song competition will be performed live for the first time.
Bring a blanket and chairs to this free, family-friendly event and enjoy kids entertainment and activities form 1pm.
All events listed have been supported by the 50th Anniversary Fund.
