Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said rapid damage assessments and emergency works are already underway this morning and crews had been busy through Sunday afternoon and evening.
The most affected areas have been Caloundra, Buderim, Kawana, Maroochydore/Cotton Tree, and Glass House.
“There is a substantial amount of fallen trees and debris across these areas, and unfortunately many private properties have sustained damage,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“Emergency crews were able to assist residents in a unit at Buderim-Mooloolaba Road which lost its roof, requiring the evacuation of the residents.”
Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors have worked with the residents to provide emergency accommodation for those who were displaced.
Mayor Jamieson said currently two of council’s waste recovery centres – Caloundra and Buderim are closed due to large trees blocking the entrances.
Energex were on site Sunday afternoon to clear power lines brought down in the storm near the entrance to the Caloundra Resource Recovery Centre and make the areas safe for tree removal.
“Caloundra is expected to be opened this morning, however Buderim shall remained closed for the morning until the trees have been removed.
“This has been prioritised by our crews to ensure re-opening of the waste recovery centres to allow residents to dump their storm damaged waste,” Mayor Jamieson said.
SES recorded over 150 storm related jobs and are working through these to assist the community in making their properties safe. These are expected to increase this morning after further assessments have been completed.
Council crews and resources have been allocated response tasks and clean-up is well underway.
Further information will continue to be provided when the full extent of the damage is known.
“Council worked with other agencies to quickly remove fallen trees from roads last night after the storm hit and our crews continue to remove debris from parks and roadsides today,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“Council crews are prepared in case of further storms and we also urge residents to clear their yards as much as possible today to prevent further damage.”
