Submissions to Sunshine Coast Airport expansion close soon
Sunshine Coast Airport general manager Pater Pallot said the length and width of the current runway require special dispensation for A320 and Boeing 737 jets.
“But that dispensation could be removed at any time,” he said.
Did you know the passenger jets landing at our airport are only able to do so under an exemption from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)?
Sunshine Coast Airport general manager Pater Pallot said the length and width of the current runway require special dispensation for A320 and Boeing 737 jets.
“But that dispensation could be removed at any time,” he said.
“All it would take would be for an incident at a similarly accredited airport runway, and airports like ours could lose their operational capacity on the spot.
That would see cancellation of all Virgin and Jetstar flights in and out of Sunshine Coast Airport, and which would relegate it back to a remote regional airfield.
“That’s the main reason we want to build the new runway,” Mr Pallot said.
“It is essential we build a new runway that meets all of the CASA standards to ensure long term air access to the Sunshine Coast for generations to come.”
Submissions on the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion project must be with the Office of the Coordinator General by 5pm Thursday 13 November.
