SS Dicky stories captured in film

To leave a lasting legacy of the Sunshine Coast’s much-loved icon – the SS Dicky shipwreck - council has produced a DVD, Time and Tide – The SS Dicky Story, featuring community memories and stories about the wreck and how it fits into our social landscape.

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said there was no doubt the SS Dicky had been an important part of the Sunshine Coast since it was shipwrecked 122 years ago on the beach that now bears it name.

“ Time and Tide – The SS Dicky Story captures the historic relocation of the wreck through the shared gathering of community memories and images to create a digital story about its past, present and future,” Cr Dwyer said.

“This year, the Heritage Levy funded the production of the film which is part of the interpretation of the SS Dicky relocation project.

“It is important to note, the community will be invited to provide input into opportunities for the interpretation and display of the wreck in the park.

“This commemorative film was developed in partnership with the Friends of Caloundra Lighthouse and formed part of a grant application to the State Government. The film produced by James Muller also features professional storyteller Gail Robinson.

“ Time and Tide – The SS Dicky Story also acknowledges the significant social, aesthetic and interpretive heritage values of this site and it is only fitting that we recognise the valuable contribution it has made to our region’s heritage.

“There is no doubt this film will increase community understanding of the connection of the historic shipwreck to the heritage of the Sunshine Coast.”

Copies of the DVD will be available to purchase from December 10 from council’s libraries, customer service centres, Caloundra Regional Gallery and selected retailers or online via the libraries e-Shop at www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
