If a picture says a thousand words, an exciting new photography competition will start a vibrant conversation with the Sunshine Coast’s Sister City, Xiamen in China.
If a picture says a thousand words, an exciting new photography competition will start a vibrant conversation with the Sunshine Coast’s Sister City, Xiamen in China.
A major city on China’s south-east coast, Xiamen, which is located in Fujian Province, has had a Friendship City agreement with the former Maroochy Shire Council and current Sunshine Coast Council since 1999.
Councillor Assisting the Mayor on International Relations Jenny McKay has developed strong linkages with the Xiamen Municipal Foreign Affairs Office during that time and has been awarded honorary citizen status by the Fujian Province.
Cr McKay welcomed the opportunity to share and celebrate both regions’ unique landscapes and natural environment with the world through a lens.
“The idea behind this competition is for each of Xiamen’s 35 sister city regions to demonstrate their unique beauty to visitors, to promote deeper understanding and foster a closer connection with our sister city,” Cr McKay said.
“The Sunshine Coast has forged strong ties with Xiamen and the Fujian Province, delivering opportunities for growth and exchange that benefit both of our regions.
“This competition not only gives our budding photographers the opportunity to promote the Sunshine Coast to Xiamen in China, but also to 35 other countries that are sister cities to the Xiamen.”
Sunshine Coast Sister City Association President John James welcomed the opportunity for the Sunshine Coast community to share their work and see the world through the eyes of photographers in all over the world.
“Over the past eight years, the Sunshine Coast has visited and hosted many cultural youth events between Xiamen City and the Sunshine Coast,” Mr James said.
“This photography competition is another wonderful aspect of the arts, linking our two cities and drawing our partnerships and friendships even closer.”
An exhibition of 64 prize-winning photographs will be staged in China in July, with prizes presented at the opening ceremony.
Submissions by local photographers are expected to reveal the photographer’s living experience and record the development, humanities, social ethics, ecological environment, customs or culture of the Sunshine Coast region.
