Have you got an old computer or printer gathering dust? Dispose of it for free at the Buyequip e-waste recyclathon on Tuesday 27 March, 10am – 3pm at Maroochydore Officeworks.

Sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Council in conjunction with the Queensland Government and a number of commercial organisations, the recyclathon aims to reduce the amount of hazardous waste going to landfill by collecting and recovering old IT equipment.

E-waste for this recyclathon includes old computers, printers, laptops, CRT and LCD monitors however not televisions.

Manager of Waste and Resources Management, Wayne Schafer said council’s support aligned with the Waste Minimisation strategy to educate the community about recycling electronic waste.

"E-waste materials can become dangerous when sent to landfill, so this is an opportunity for us to see a great chunk of the Coast’s old IT equipment disposed of responsibly," Mr Schafer said.

"These dangerous materials will be collected and safely disposed of by Buyequip.

"Buyequip will also separate the equipment for useful electronic, metal and plastics which can be later used in new steel and plastic products.

"This is a rare opportunity so I urge everyone with old IT equipment to come to Maroochydore Officeworks on Tuesday and help reduce the reliance on landfill use."

Electrical and electronic products contain a complex mix of materials which release hazardous substances into the environment when not removed by e-waste experts.

E-waste collection specialists, Buyequip are specialists in e-waste removal and will manage the material separation of the collected items.

The recyclathon is part of an introduction to the Australian Government’s national collection and recycling scheme for end of life television and computer equipment.

This scheme ensures that the highest resource value is maintained and carbon emissions are minimised.
