Local people and businesses can recycle their unwanted computers and televisions (e-waste) at events during February and March to help reduce the amount of recyclable items going into Coast landfills.

Sunshine Coast Council has partnered with Drop Zone to provide a number of free e-waste recycling events, which will be held at various tips across the Coast starting at Noosa landfill and Cooroy transfer station this Saturday 23 February.
E-waste disposal will be free of charge for all televisions—such as CRTs, plasma, LCD and projection televisions—and computers and computer products.
Environment Portfolio Councillor Tony Wellington said the program was in line with council’s Waste Minimisation Strategy 2009-2014.
“Electronic waste is the fastest growing waste category in Australia. It’s growing three times faster than any other type of waste, and contains hazardous materials that must be managed in a safe manner,” he said.
“We can help protect our natural resources and environment through responsible recycling—that includes reducing the amount of electronic waste that’s currently going into our landfills.
“All items dropped off at e-waste events will be taken to an approved recycler, who will dismantle and separate the different components of each product.
“There are many materials that can be recovered from computers and televisions such as glass and plastics, iron, steel, aluminium and copper, plus precious metals such as gold, platinum and silver.
“We urge residents and small businesses to make the most of these e-waste events and recycle their old equipment by dropping it off at their nearest tip free of charge on the allocated days.”

Items will not be returned so all personal information from hard drives must be removed before being dropped off.
The initiative is part of the Australian Government’s National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme.
