Putting on a funky, dark and sparkling brew

Two talented local bands have been selected to support the new Australian comedy from David Burton and Claire Christian, showing at Sunshine Coast Council’s Nambour Civic Centre on Thursday, September 4 at 7.30pm.

The play, Hedonism’s Second Album, is about a fictitious Brisbane indie rock band Hedonism.

As the story goes, Hedonism’s first album took everyone by surprise (especially themselves) and they’re determined to enjoy their newfound status as rock stars.

Now all they have to do is record a second album and prove it wasn’t all a fluke.

Of course, nothing runs smoothly in rock’n’roll as front man Gareth just can’t get it together, lead guitarist Chimney has got cold feet, Sumo the drummer is demanding a ten-minute solo and bass player Michael has up and vanished.

After an all-weekend bender record label executive Phil is sent to pull the boys into line and prevent the looming PR disaster.

During the testosterone-fuelled fallout, closely-guarded secrets are laid bare and friendships tested.

While the show is a theatrical play, it’s also a full blown rock gig and The Flumes and The Floating Bridges are the two local bands selected to support Hedonism on the night.

The concert will have you enjoying the sounds of The Flumes with their electric harp pouring out psychedelic melodies over a stylin rhythm section laced with soulful vocals.

The Flumes conjure up a lushly funky, dark and sparkling, intoxicating brew.

It’s difficult to pin this trio down to one genre with an exquisitely eclectic blend of psychedelic folk laced with funk, blues, jazz, trip hop and a splash of reggae.

The Floating Bridges’ formation and inception was based on the Sunshine Coast, but diversity, eclecticism and travel have strengthened their musical skills.

The band members originally met in high school, and have formed one of the best live bands around.

This play is for anyone who’s ever been let down by their favourite band, or their best mates.

Playwright David Burton is well known for his work including April's Fool, which was based on the true story of a Toowoomba family and toured nationally in 2012.

This play was shortlisted for the Premier’s Drama Award in 2011.
