Popular Mooloolaba area undergoes streetscaping upgrade

Sunshine Coast Council has started work to upgrade the beach end of Mooloolaba’s Brisbane Road to extend the “look and feel” of the esplanade and improve pedestrian access.

Division 4 Councillor Chris Thompson said the streetscaping project would strengthen the link between Brisbane Road and Mooloolaba Esplanade.

“Council is upgrading the footpath on the eastern side of Brisbane Road, between Taps Mooloolaba and Bauhinia Chinese Restaurant,” Cr Thompson said.

“People who visit this area of Brisbane Road usually explore the esplanade as well, so it makes sense for us to continue that same streetscaping further along while we upgrade the area.

“A major part of the upgrade is relocating the Energex power lines underground, which is always a big improvement.

“There will also be stone-faced seating walls, a new pedestrian crossing across Brisbane Road, street trees and gardens, and improved street lighting.

“Our Place Making Mooloolaba project is still underway and the draft master plan will be open for comment in September.

“Revitalisation the streetscape on Brisbane Road is one of the initiatives suggested by the draft master plan.”

Cr Thompson said Council had worked with Sunshine Coast Ironman 70.3 organisers to ensure there was no impact on the event course for their race on September 13.

“We have so many fantastic events in Mooloolaba that sometimes it’s unavoidable to have some upgrades underway while our visitors are here,” he said.

“We’ve worked with the Ironman 70.3 organisers to make sure there’s no impact on the course and work will stop during the event weekend so we have minimal inconvenience to traffic and pedestrians.

“The upgrade will be a great improvement for nearby businesses, and it will be business as usual for them during construction.”

This work is scheduled to be completed by the end of November, weather permitting.

• Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of construction staff, pedestrians and motorists.
• Some street parking will be affected near the construction area to ensure public safety. All existing on-street car parks will be reinstated once construction is complete.
