Playground celebrates Peregian’s unique lifestyle

Cr Russell Green visited the newly completed $59, 616 Peregian Beach Park Playground yesterday admiring the bespoke design, which represents the local beach and surf club lifestyle past and present.

Cr Green said the playground is a nod to the history and individuality of Peregian Beach.

“It’s important that we continue to create a sense of place in our communities and our visual design elements such as playgrounds are a great way of doing that,” Cr Green said.

“The budget for this playground was very small, however council’s design team creatively used every cent to construct an impressive playground for Peregian.

“The new structure is timber and stainless steel, making it more able to withstand the salty conditions.”

“And because the community were happy with the existing playground design, any improvements were made with that feedback in mind.”

Dallas Bickley, council’s playground designer said that when he was doing the initial design sketches, he’d drawn a picture of surfboards leaning against the walkway element.

“I wasn’t sure if that look would work here, but when I saw an old picture of the Peregian Surf Club in the paper with surfboards leaning outside, I knew we were on the right track,” Mr Bickley said.

The playground includes:

• a large timber climbing structure complete with club house, slides, tunnel, fireman’s pole and activity panel
• longboard climbing wall with five boards (one of the boards is coloured in the Peregian Beach Surf Club nipper colours)
• double swing with large timber oars
• flying fox glide
• viewing platform looking towards the beach
• climbing nets
• soft fall bark and edging
• all complemented by the existing full playground shelter.
