Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said registration of cats and dogs was an important part of responsible pet ownership.
“All cats and dogs must be registered with council each year,” Cr McKay said.
“Not only does registration information help council to reunite lost pets with their owners, it also helps in planning for dog friendly areas and infrastructure, such as dog off-leash parks.”
There are 44,925 dogs and 9031 cats registered with council.
Significant registration fee discounts apply for dog and cat owners who have had their pets de-sexed and micro-chipped with the cost being just $13 or free for pensioners.
There is also the option of a lifetime registration for de-sexed and micro-chipped cats that is only $78 with no annual renewal required.
Registration is free for pets under six-months-old.
New residents to the Sunshine Coast can transfer their cat or dog registration for free, so if you’ve recently moved to the area now is the time to contact council and register your pet.
Renewal of pet registration is due by September 30, 2017.
The annual registration period for cats and dogs starts on October 1 each year and runs through until September 30 the following year.
There are several convenient payment methods available, including online payments via MyCouncil or BPay, over the phone or at a council customer contact centre.
