The Sunshine Coast Regional Council Strategy and Planning Committee unanimously endorsed a recommendation to refuse the development of a hotel at Beddington Rd, Doonan.

The proposed hotel includes dining and bar areas, a gaming lounge for forty machines, TAB services, a bottle shop and a children’s play area and has attracted submissions for and against the development.

Regional Strategy and Planning Committee chair, and local division 9 Councillor, Vivien Griffin, said the committee agreed with Planning Scheme’s intent to preserve and safeguard the area, zoned rural residential, from further commercial development.

“The hotel proposed is more suited to urban commercial land use and out of step located on a sustainable, rural residential site,” Cr Griffin said.

“Not only will increased traffic, parking and noise impact on the rural amenity of the surrounding area but the proposed development will also adversely affect the Doonan Creek catchment and floodplain.

“After consideration and debate the Committee agreed there were not enough benefits to override the Planning Scheme.”

The recommendation was referred to the Ordinary Meeting of Council to be held on Thursday 12 March at Tewantin for a final decision.
