New pathways and picnic spaces open for summer

Council has reassured residents and businesses on Maroochydore’s Bradman Avenue that construction on the Maroochy foreshore upgrade will not continue over the busy Christmas holiday period, with construction site storage and barriers to be cleared this week.

Remaining aspects of the upgrade have been rescheduled until after the 2016 Australia Day public holiday after geotechnical site conditions caused unforeseen delays.

Division 8 Councillor Jason OPray said council understood the area was popular with locals and visitors over the summer holidays.

"Due to the extent of construction remaining, council is deferring further work until after the Christmas school holidays so there's no interference with the summer picnics that are so popular along Bradman Avenue,” Cr OPray said.

"The site will be clear and safe over the holidays, with no construction materials remaining on site.

“The latest stage of this foreshore upgrade is brightening Maroochy foreshore near Chambers Island with wider pathways, more picnic space and an improved beach access ramp

“We’re also upgrading the revetment wall but this has been delayed due to geotechnical issues requiring further technical assessment.

“Whilst geotechnical investigations were done before work started, and we’ve had success with revetment wall upgrades only 300m from the current construction site, the underground issue couldn’t have been detected until earthworks started.

“We aim to complete the project as early as possible in the New Year to minimise disruptions.
