Community hands help plant 4500 new native plants across the Coast

Hundreds of hands joined together to plant 4500 native trees, shrubs and sedges in our local environment reserves for National Tree Day on Sunday (July 29).

Families across the Sunshine Coast had a fun day out at events at Coolum Beach and Pelican Waters.

In an effort to help Planet Ark reach its goal of planting one million trees across Australia, 403 people volunteered to take part in tree planting at Stumers Creek Riparian Reserve in Coolum Beach and Lamerough Creek West Environmental Reserve in Pelican Waters and collectively planted 4500 trees at both sites.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said it was encouraging to see so many people volunteer their time to support Australia’s biggest tree planting event.

“It truly is an incredibly effort which saw more than 260 people plant 2500 trees, shrubs and sedges at Stumers Creek and more than 130 people turn out to plant 2000 trees at Pelican Waters,” Cr McKay said.

“Council greatly appreciates the efforts of our volunteers who have taken time out of their weekend to get outside, help us make a difference and enhance our natural environment.

“These events were supported by Coolum & North Shore Coast Care, Coolum Lions Club, Caloundra Lions Club and Caloundra Rotary Club, and we appreciate their ongoing support.”
