Moving council’s vision for integrated transport ahead

Members of the Sunshine Coast Community Transport Group (CTG) will be available for comment on key transport issues, at 10.30am Thursday 11 June.

Members of the Sunshine Coast Community Transport Group (CTG) will be available for comment on key transport issues, at 10.30am Thursday 11 June.

The group, consisting of community and industry residents and individuals, was established by council last year. The group provides council with feedback on all aspects of achieving a sustainable, integrated transport system for the region.

On Thursday’s agenda are –

  • Introduction of public transport levy
  • Proposed transport initiatives
  • Presentation on the development of Integrated Transport Strategy for the Sunshine Coast.

Integrated Transport Portfolio holder and chair of the CTG, Vivien Griffin said council is committed to planning and delivering excellent public transport, and to reducing reliance on the car on the Sunshine Coast.

“Council is very aware we must make major gains in public transport, walking and cycling to fulfil our commitment to be Australia’s most sustainable region,” Cr Griffin said.

“Big ticket infrastructure projects are urgently needed to meet the Coast’s growth requirements and to avoid gridlock on our roads in the proposed bring-forward areas of Palmview and Caloundra South, and the in major employment hubs of Maroochydore, Kawana and Sippy Downs.”

Cr Griffin said the recently introduced $20 Public Transport Levy not only sends a strong message to the State Government that council is serious about public transport, but dedicates funds to new transport projects from the hinterland to the sea.

“Council has developed a range of transport initiatives and projects which could be funded by the Transport Levy and Thursday’s meeting gives the CTG an opportunity to provide valuable input on prioritising them,” Cr Griffin said.

Consultants working with the community and council to develop the Integrated Transport Strategy will present on Thursday, outlining how the vital planning document will be developed.

Cr Griffin welcomed the presentation and said the strategy was a priority for the CTG over the coming months.

“The development of this plan is a key to the delivery of council’s vision,” Cr Griffin said.

“It will give clear direction on future transport priorities and the ability to deliver the sustainability the community expects from this council.

“The CTG includes some of the best local knowledge and transport know-how to achieve this and will continue to provide feedback and advise council of the way forward.”

Recommendations from the CTG are referred to council for endorsement.
