With only three sleeps remaining in 2017, Mooloolaba is getting ready to welcome in the New Year in style.
There will be a feast of free entertainment along The Esplanade for the whole family from 4pm until midnight on Sunday, December 31.
Marking the finale of the 50th Anniversary of the Sunshine Coast celebrations, it will also be your last chance to help council break a Guinness Book of World Records for the most contributions to a greeting card.
The giant card, with room for 18,000 signatures will be located across the road from the Loo with a View.
Acting Mayor Cr Tim Dwyer and Queensland Police Service’s Acting Assistant Commissioner Darryl Johnson were on The Esplanade today to officially launch the New Year’s Eve Mooloolaba event.
Councillor Dwyer said Mooloolaba was a special place to celebrate New Year’s Eve with family and friends.
“Council is pleased to put on this event for the community to come together in a safe environment, celebrate the end of 2017 and welcome in a New Year,” Cr Dwyer said.
“We’ve got great children’s entertainment including a meet and greet with the much loved characters from Universal Studios Despicable Me 3™ and Dreamworks Kung Fu Panda plus the Minions activity centre, an inflatable slide and obstacle course, face painting and temporary tattoos.
“There is also a great line-up of live entertainment including acts such as The Andrea Kirwin Trio, Mason Hope, Dan Horne Trio, The Floating Bridges and Vegas Please.
“SeaFM will be broadcasting live from 4pm at Loo with a View, followed by a live ClubCast with DJ’s playing from 7:30pm until midnight on the Sea Stage down on the beach.”
Cr Dwyer said there will be a special addition to the fireworks displays this year.
“In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast celebrations, the fireworks displays at 8:30pm and midnight will feature unique effects,” Cr Dwyer said.
“Another special addition this year will be a huge 15 metre x 15 metre public art installation called Zspyda produced by local artist Lucas Salton which will be choreographed into a beach dance party by the two fireworks displays.”
Delicious food will be available from local vendors and restaurants along The Esplanade.
Free bus services will be available from 3pm to and from the event. For information visit Translink at https://translink.com.au/plan-your-journey/event-transport/8866.
Council will be providing free shuttle services to and from the event from the University of the Sunshine Coast, departing every 30 minutes from 5pm to 8pm and back to USC again from 8.45pm.
There will be free shuttle services home from NYE Mooloolaba to Kawana Shoppingworld, University of the Sunshine Coast or Maroochydore Bus Station from 8:45pm. All shuttle services will terminate at 2am.
Please note that intoxicated people or the carrying of alcohol will not be permitted on board buses.
Don’t forget New Year’s Eve Mooloolaba is a drug, alcohol and glass free event. Intoxicated people will not be permitted entry.
In an effort to minimise the event’s carbon footprint, council is banning helium balloons and disposable chemical glow products (battery operated LED products are acceptable) which may end up in landfill or waterways harming marine life.
Pet owners in the vicinity to ensure their pets are safe and secure for the duration of the event as the noise of fireworks may cause them to become agitated.
Council delivers this iconic event in a relaxed, safe, security patrolled and fenced event zone in partnership with a number of organisations, including Queensland Police, Queensland Ambulance Service, SES, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service, Safe Nite Out, Red Frogs and Sunshine Coast First Aid Volunteers, ensuring public safety is paramount.
The celebrations at Mooloolaba are only one of a number of New Year’s celebrations planned across the Sunshine Coast. The Kings Beach, Caloundra and Coolum Beach events are also supported by council.
Visit council’s website for more details on the event including traffic and transport information.
Sunshine Coast Council gratefully acknowledges its New Year’s Eve Mooloolaba supporters – Sea FM, Mix FM and The Surf Club Mooloolaba.
