The inaugural Brisbane Lions AFL women's team will make its first visit to the Sunshine Coast for a pre-season training camp that will feature a community session on Saturday (January 7).
The Lions, who are preparing for their debut season in the AFLW competition, will meet their fans at Sunshine Coast Council’s Maroochydore Multi-Sport Complex, Fishermans Road, between 8.30am and 10.30am.
Brisbane Lions women's chief executive officer Breeanna Brock said women's AFL is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia and we're really excited to showcase our women's team.
“Many of our players are Sunshine Coast locals so it is a good opportunity for our women to give back to the community," she said.
“The team are looking forward to getting up to the Sunshine Coast to continue preparations for the season which is just around the corner.
“We’d love to see as many members and fans as we can up there on Saturday so they can have a sneak peek at how we are tracking.”
Tourism, Sport and Major Events Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray said the Sunshine Coast had quickly gained a reputation as a preferred pre-season camp destination for AFL clubs.
“I encourage all AFL fans to head down to see what is a history making Lions women’s AFL team go through their paces on Saturday,” Cr O’Pray said.
“It will be an honour to have them here for the first time and to play our part in their preparations for the first season.
“It will give everyone a great taste of what’s to come in the inaugural season.”
Eight teams will compete for the inaugural AFLW premiership — Brisbane Lions, Carlton, Collingwood, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Fremantle, Adelaide and Greater Western Sydney (GWS).
The first round of AFL Women's action will take place on February 4 and 5, with the Brisbane Lions taking on Melbourne at Casey Fields in Melbourne.
