Plenty to celebrate as Mary Cairncross Rainforest Discovery Centre reaches first anniversary

One year on from its official opening, the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Rainforest Discovery Centre has received accolades from around Australia and welcomed a record-breaking number of visitors.

The $4.7 million Rainforest Discovery Centre sits within the 55-hectare Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and offers spectacular views of the heritage-listed Glass House Mountains.

The centre has also received multiple awards for its innovative and sustainable design being recognised by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia, Economic Development Australia, Master Builders Queensland and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, the centre was also a finalist in the highly-regarded Banksia Awards in 2017.

Division 5 Councillor, Jenny McKay said approximately 159,000 visitors have flocked to explore the remarkable interactive displays, experiences and exhibits at the centre since it was formally opened in February last year.

“It truly is an amazing place that has something for everyone of every age to discover and enjoy,” Cr McKay said.

“From guided walks to art installations and kids’ holiday workshops, there’s always something new to explore and enjoy.”

Breakfast with the Birds sessions, hosted by the Sunshine Coast chapter of Birdlife Australia, are just some of the current events being held at the centre on alternative Wednesdays and Saturdays through to March 31.

While the Sunshine Coast Council’s Birds of a Feather holiday program promises to set imaginations soaring at the reserve with a range of children’s school holiday workshops from April 10-14.
