Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot said Maroochydore is set to become one of the most liveable and vibrant cities in the country.

"The new CBD will attract new investment to the region, create jobs and make the Sunshine Coast a highly desirable place to do business," he said.

"It won’t only be good for our economy, it will also make the city an even more attractive place to visit.

Cr Abbot said there were some misconceptions out there about what the new CBD will look like, "but I can tell you it will include 40% open space – that’s 20 hectares".

"The proposed design for Maroochydore shows open space is the actual heart of the city, not the buildings," he said.

"People will also be able to enjoy a natural waterway running through the parkland.

"At the moment only golfers get to enjoy the open space at Horton Park – in the CBD everybody will get the benefits of the parks.

"The Sunshine Coast will keep its unique identity, and the Maroochydore CBD project will reinforce the region as vibrant, green and diverse.

"It will be a CBD that the whole community will be proud of and it will be a great central place to do business."
