LED street light trial to shine on the Sunshine Coast

A new trial upgrade to LED street lighting will be considered in council’s 2018-19 budget, after council supported a pilot project in a proposed partnership with Energy Queensland.

Economic Development and Innovation Portfolio Councillor Steve Robinson said the pilot project would also include smart control sensors and network connectivity.

“Council is committed to implementing LED lights and smart technology for their environmental benefits as we work towards becoming Australia’s most sustainable region – vibrant, green, diverse,” Cr Robinson said.

“In addition to reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions, LED lighting will reduce light spillage to enhance dark sky and improve turtle testing, and increase safety for pedestrians and motorists.

“This approach to energy efficiency in public lighting complements our renewable energy initiatives and adds to the success of the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm, which is already offsetting more than 100% of council’s total electricity consumption.

“Public LED lighting and the smart controls will also be the latest in a series of smart city technologies to be implemented around our region.”

The pilot is part of council’s Urban Lighting Master Plan and the extent will depend on potential funding support from Energy Queensland. The pilot outcomes will inform a whole of region business case for further consideration by council.
