Council is encouraging rural landholders to apply for funding under the environment category of council’s grants program to help them preserve the natural values of their land.

The environment category provides support for people undertaking restoration and conservation works on their own properties.

Environment Portfolio holder Cr Keryn Jones said that these grants are a real asset to rural landholders.

“Grant funding makes provision for things such as fencing off creeks to livestock, revegetating degraded environments, controlling environmental weeds, and regenerating bushland,” Cr Jones said

“The grants are there for landholders who want to maintain or protect the natural values of their own properties.

“Council developed the grants program with partnership very much in mind and with such a large region, we need to make life easier for the people who really want to make a difference.

“The funding enables landholders to seek financial help for the work they may already be doing or have always wanted to do.

“These grants help us manage conservation in our region in a cohesive way, and council officers are on hand to offer advice and support to people who are keen to apply.”

The next round of community grants closes on 15 March 2010 and the environment category is open to those wishing to undertake restoration or conservation work on either private or public land.
