Help reduce dog bite injuries and book now for kid’s pet education program

Sunshine Coast Council is continuing to educate kids across the region through the “Pet Education for Kids” program which has been designed to help children interact with dogs safely.

The free program is offered to all Sunshine Coast childcare centres, preschools and kindergartens with children aged between 3-5 years.

Presented by council’s pet education officer, with the help of trusty sidekicks, Sunny the dog and Sasha the cat, the fun and interactive presentation helps teach children about being responsible pet owners and how to avoid being bitten by a dog.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said there were hundreds of children across Australia who were victims of dog bite injuries each year, and most children were bitten at home by their family dog.

“Council is committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and helping to keep kids safe from dog attacks,” Cr McKay said.

“Unfortunately, children under five are most at risk, which is why our Pet Education for Kids program has been designed especially for young ones.

“The holiday season is fast approaching and many families have visitors who bring their dogs to the beautiful Sunshine Coast, so it’s important that children know how to behave around dogs to keep them safe, whether it’s a dog they know or one that has gone astray.

“The program booked out quickly last term so I encourage any childcare centres, preschools and kindergartens to get in early and take advantage of this great free program.”

Children will receive a free toy dog or frisbee, plus a dog bite prevention flyer to take home to parents.
