The best of Queensland’s gymnastic talent will descend on the Sunshine Coast from this weekend in a 10-day extravaganza marking a COVID-safe return to state competition for Gymnastics Queensland.
More than 2100 gymnasts from 75 clubs across Queensland will compete at the event, being held at Caloundra Indoor Stadium from December 5-14.
Sunshine Coast Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg said he was delighted to welcome families from across Queensland for the Extravaganza.
“Events like this are always exciting for our community and deliver incredible benefits to businesses and tourism operators in the region,” Cr Landsberg said.
“We hope the competitors and their families enjoy their time on the Sunshine Coast and get to enjoy the diverse experiences on offer around Caloundra and the wider region outside competition sessions.”
Gymnastics Queensland CEO Chris Rushton said the supercharged event was the first of its kind to be held in Queensland.
“The Gymnastics Queensland Extravaganza replaces 10 events cancelled this year due to COVID-19 and will see all seven Gymsports contested for the first time ever at the same meet,” Mr Rushton said.
“It’s been an extremely challenging year for everyone and our clubs have been incredibly resilient, with all clubs now returned to training.”
“It will be a great opportunity to celebrate our gymnasts’ achievements in this difficult time, ease them back into competition and finish the year on a positive note,” he said.
High performance gymnasts Michael Tone and Kate Sayer, Jayden Robinson-Patch and Premier Senior International Rhythmic Group will be among the gymnasts competing, with men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics, aerobics, trampoline, rhythmic and acrobatics all on the schedule.
Mr Rushton said he was excited to return to the Sunshine Coast with such a unique event.
“Our gymnasts are very passionate about the sport and the Sunshine Coast has always been so welcoming to us,” he said.
“We thank Sunshine Coast Regional Council for their support of our events over the past 13 years and look forward to putting our talent on show as we ease back into competition.”
