Grab a read from the beach ‘pop up’ library

If you forget to pick up your book for a relaxing read before heading to Kings Beach on Monday 20 January, don’t despair because we’re bringing the library to you!

Beach goers can grab a book from council’s ‘pop up’ library between 9am and 1pm at Kings Beach as part of a program to both increase membership and encourage residents to have a say on the future direction of Sunshine Coast Council’s library service.

The draft Sunshine Coast Council Libraries Plan 2014-2024 goes on display from 20 January to 21 February with all submissions going into the draw for a chance to win a range of prizes including an Apple iPad Mini.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Libraries are a popular and valued community service which attracts more than 1.5 million visitors per year.

“These include people who have not yet realised all the wonderful benefits that come with becoming a library member,” Cr McKay said.

“So, we have decided to bring the books to the people and if you are visiting Kings Beach on 20 January you will be able to borrow a book before you head to the beach and also find out more about your local library and have a say on the draft Sunshine Coast Libraries Plan 2014-2024.

“The 10 year draft Plan sets a vision and identifies the values for the future operation and direction of the region’s libraries. Now we want to make sure council has got it right by inviting the community to provide feedback by 21 February and go into the draw for a chance to win an Apple iPad Mini or tickets to a Sunshine Coast Venues event.

“The vision for our libraries is to “stretch minds and unlock opportunities” and the plan aspires to achieve this by outlining opportunities to enhance current services and create a sustainable, responsive and appealing Sunshine Coast Library service for all users – current and new.”

The draft Sunshine Coast Libraries Plan’s primary purpose is to improve the condition and operation of the library network, identify library site and design considerations and prioritise future library developments.

The Plan findings show that most library branches will require relocation or redesign to remain relevant, highly used and responsive to community needs.

The feedback provided will help to inform the preparation of the final Sunshine Coast Libraries Plan. It is anticipated that a final Libraries Plan will be presented to council for adoption in mid-2014.

Community members can review and provide comment on the draft Plan from 20 January until 5pm on 21 February 2014. Copies of the draft Plan are available for viewing at council’s libraries and Customer Contact Centres.
