Girraween Sports Clubhouse construction begins

The Girraween Sports Precinct is another step closer to completion, with construction crews moving on site this week to begin work on the clubhouse.

The multi-staged Girraween Sports Precinct project is being rolled out over a number of years and will be the new home for the Noosa Little Athletics Club and the Noosa Lions Football Club on completion.

Division 11 Councillor Russell Green said the clubs can expect to see a top notch clubhouse rise out of the ground in the coming months.

"The single story building boasts all the functionality the clubs will need during their playing seasons, including a club room able to sit 100 people and four change rooms," Cr Green said.

"There will also be two offices, a first aid and referees room, toilet and shower facilities, an under cover storage area, and a kitchen and kiosk for those all important after game get togethers.

"This sleek modern building is perfectly positioned on the site to give spectators the best view of the games, all in the comfort and shade of the clubhouse.

"Work on the clubhouse is due to be complete in early 2012 and I know the Noosa Little Athletics Club and the Noosa Lions Football Club are just as excited as I am to see it take shape."

2011 has been a big year for the site, with the sports field construction which include turfing irrigation and landscape works completed early in the year, the electrical connection and field lighting recently installed and tested, and work on the entrance arch over the future criterium track almost complete.

Major Projects Portfolio Councillor Debbie Blumel said this project is another great example of a successful partnership between the Queensland Government and council.

"The Queensland Government has contributed $1.5 million to this regionally significant project through its Sport and Recreation Service's Major Facilities Program," Cr Blumel said.

"On completion, the Girraween Sports Precinct will provide the community with a multi-use, district-level sport and recreation facility.

"It will meet the needs of a wide range of users, including sporting organisations, schools, community groups, cyclists, tri-athletes and community members.

"Through projects like the Girraween Sporting Precinct, council is driving a sustainable and innovative region by delivering facilities to boost our economy and meeting our growing region’s needs."

The Girraween Sports Precinct will consist of two senior and two junior football fields, athletics facilities, a criterium cycling circuit, clubhouse and amenities and carparking.
