Policy and program portfolio councillor Jenny McKay today officially launched Seniors Week 2008 on the Sunshine Coast today at the Maroochy Baptist Centre, Maroochydore.
In partnership with Diversicare and other community groups, Sunshine Coast Council put together today’s Cultural Connections Positive Ageing Expo; a program of entertainment, free seminars, health checks for men, stalls and lunch for the launch of Seniors Week, 23 – 31 August.
Cr McKay believes Seniors Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the contribution our senior residents make to the community.
“Seniors Week plays an important role in encouraging the older population to stay active while also introducing them to new opportunities,” Cr McKay said.
“Seniors play an important role in shaping our society and have a great deal of knowledge and experience to share, and this is a way to say thanks and provide opportunities for social interactions, physical activity and further skills development.”
The official opening of Seniors Week included the launch of the region’s Seniors Week Calendar of Events, the latest Keeping in Touch booklet and the third season of the popular talent quest, Senior Superstar Sunshine Coast.
The Positive Ageing Expo’s entertainment highlights included performances by Senior Superstar 2007 finalists, belly dancing, solo singing and laughter workshops.
This year’s Calendar of Events has a range of activities happening across the Sunshine Coast including:
