Sunshine Coast Council today announced the region’s galleries will turn pink in October to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the Noosa and Caloundra Regional Galleries and the Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy are being creative in their approach to the national breast cancer cause by lighting their buildings in pink.

"We invite the community to join in the fun when the lights are turned on at each gallery which will coincide with an exhibition opening in October," Cr McKay said.

"Sunshine Coast galleries are thrilled to be part of the global Illumination project that the National Breast Cancer Foundation run each year.

"Last year the National Breast Cancer Foundation lit 38 national landmarks pink including Parliament House in Canberra and the Storey Bridge in Brisbane.

"Internationally the campaign has lit the White House, the Empire State Building, Kensington Palace and Tokyo Tower among others.

"The campaign is a unique initiative to put the spotlight on breast cancer awareness by illuminating buildings, monuments and landmarks around the world in a blaze of pink light.

"Lighting our galleries in pink is a chance to highlight these beautiful spaces in an unusual and meaningful way.

"It is a chance for the community to come together and enjoy art while supporting a worthwhile cause."

Donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation will be accepted at each gallery during the Illuminations.

The community are invited to attend one of the following pink illumination ceremonies:

  • Caloundra Regional Gallery on Friday 12 October at 6pm
  • The Butter Factory Arts Centre, Cooroy on Friday 12 October at 6pm
  • Noosa Regional Gallery on Saturday 13 October at 2pm.
