Sunshine Coast Libraries, in conjunction with Telstra, have organised for Channel Seven’s Sunrise technology presenter, Peter Blasina - the “Gadget Guy” - to launch Seniors Week on the Coast.

Running from 14 - 22 August 2010, Seniors Week will be officially launched to the media on Monday 16 August from 9 – 11 am, outside council’s Nambour Chambers.

After speaking at the launch, Mr Blasina will be holding a large public training session for locals at the Lake Kawana Community Centre from 2 – 4 pm.

It will be the first of a series of 18 free mobile phone sessions run by Telstra staff - part of the Stay Connected program - to help residents, particularly seniors, learn how to better use their mobile phones and keep in touch with family and friends.

Councillor Paul Tatton, Service Delivery Portfolio holder, is excited to have someone of Mr Blasina’s calibre launching Seniors Week and hosting the first mobile phone session.

“Peter is recognised as one of Australia's foremost commentators on technology developments, and it is great to see him visit the Coast to help our community stay connected,” said Cr Tatton.

“With the increasing popularity and complexity of the mobile phone, it is easy to become overwhelmed with the technology.

“This is another excellent example of how our libraries are aiming to help our communities cope with the technology that surrounds us.”

Sunshine Coast Libraries’ Jacqueline Walch encourages residents and locals to take advantage of the free sessions being offered by Telstra staff from August to October 2010.

“The workshops break down the barriers for people who may not have grown up with technology, to make it easier and more comfortable for them to use technology,” said Ms Walch.

“We thank Telstra, who have partnered with council and the libraries to deliver these sessions to help people stay connected with their families and friends.”

Sessions will teach how to:

  • Understand your mobile phone
  • Send and receive text messages
  • Take and receive photos
  • Add contact names and phone numbers

Upcoming Stay Connected sessions will be running in libraries across the region from August to October 2010. For more information visit the Library website.
