Australia’s biggest celebration of commuter riding came to the Sunshine Coast today (October 17) with Sunshine Coast Council hosting a free breakfast and bike safety checks at Cotton Tree Park for National Ride to Work Day.

Division 8 Councillor Jason O’Pray joined in to thank registered riders for giving fitness, fun and commuting on two wheels a try.

“Ride to Work Day is a nationwide initiative that Sunshine Coast Council is hugely behind,” Cr O’Pray said.

“I want to encourage everyone to explore and experiment with cycling as a means of transport, and try and get on their bikes to get work – even if it’s just occasionally.

“It doesn’t have to be every single day, but if you can swap your car for your bike for some trips, that’s a great start to take a little bit of traffic off the road and ease congestion.

“It’s a fit, healthy, smart and creative way to get to work and I think it’s something that we should all consider.”

Ismay Selby from Mudjimba is 76-years-old and has been riding a bike since she was seven.

“I’ve had a number of different bikes over the years but at 76 I think moving to an e-bike, or electric bike, might be the best thing as I get older,” Ismay said.

“I had a great morning this morning. I cycled myself up a smoothie and took the opportunity to get the free bike safety check from Stuart at Cycle Zone Mooloolaba.

“I’m so glad I did as he found that I needed a new brake cable. That’s a handy pit stop to keep me safe and maybe I’m closer to changing over to an e-bike than I thought.”

This year, Ride to Work Day has fallen in the middle of Sunshine Coast Bike Week – council’s annual celebration of all things cycling.

There’s plenty more workshops and activities to come so check out the full schedule online.

Although the “Come and try an e-bike” sessions are fully booked, Ismay has booked in to give it a go at Bli Bli in November.

Great prizes up for grabs for registered Ride to Work Day riders.

Register on the Sunshine Coast Council website for your chance to win a $1000 bike shop voucher.
