Finalist in prestigious waterways awards

Sunshine Coast Council, Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) and over 30 other community, industry and government stakeholder groups have been announced as finalists in the 2016 Healthy Waterways Awards, for their collective efforts to enhance and protect our iconic Pumicestone Passage.

Environmental Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay welcomed the nomination for the 2016 Healthy Waterways Government Stewardship Award and said it provided validation of council’s work to become Australia’s most sustainable region.

“We are very excited and honoured to have been acknowledged today for our collaborative project: the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan 2013-2016,” Cr McKay said.

“Each year Healthy Waterways coordinates an awards program that recognises and celebrates the dedication and passion of people and groups that are on the ground working to keep waterways clean and healthy.

“In response to declining ecosystem health in Pumicestone Passage, council and MBRC, in partnership with around 30 stakeholders (Pumicestone Catchment Network), have been implementing the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan for the past three years.

“The Network has improved water quality, restored waterway habitats and promoted the values, understanding and sustainable use of the catchment and waterways. As a result of their ongoing commitment and action, this successful partnership is being recognised across the region.

“This Network provides a platform for ongoing planning, partnerships and action to respond to growing pressures such as population growth and climate change, and protect the Pumicestone Passage into the future.”

The awards ceremony will be held Friday July 8.
