Construction has officially started on an additional nine holes at Maleny Golf Club, with the staged design and course development to be carried out over the next two years.
Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the first nine holes, officially opened in 2015, had already proven to be a wonderful asset for Maleny and the Sunshine Coast.
Sunshine Coast Council’s 2017-18 budget included $225,000 for this financial year and another $225,000 for 2018-19 towards the design, construction and establishment of stage two of the golf course.
“These additional funds will help the club complete new tees, fairways, greens and plantings for nine additional holes to complete their layout,” Cr McKay said.
“The club members have contributed significantly to reach this point, demonstrating their ability to financially invest in the project.
“They have provided a strong business plan and have made a commitment to make the site accessible to the wider community."
Construction will be staged with three holes to be developed over the coming months, and a further six holes constructed next year.
Maleny Golf Club president Max Witten welcomed the support from council for the long-running project and said the community course would also be used for a range of other activities, including cross-country running and hosting astronomy sessions.
“Our philosophy has always been to share this site with as many people as possible,” Mr Witten said.
“We have received support from both the state and local government as well as an enormous amount of support from local volunteers.
“We have no doubt that once the course is completed it will be one of the best community golf courses on the Sunshine Coast.”
