Exhibition honours Yulyurlu Lorna Fencer Napurrurla for contribution to Indigenous art

One of the Top End’s most prominent and experimental desert artists is being honoured in the Yulyurlu Lorna Fencer Napurrurla exhibition at Noosa Regional Gallery from 28 November 2012 until 20 January 2013.

Sunshine Coast Council invites the community to celebrate the life of Yulyurlu Lorna Fencer who was part of the vibrant new art movement that began with painting classes at the Lajamanu School in 1986.

Renowned for her strong personality, energy and independent nature, Yulyurlu soon developed her own radical style of painting. Her expressive and colourful works caught the imagination of many collectors and galleries and within a decade she became one of the region’s most sought-after artists.

In 2000 Yulyurlu moved to Katherine where she became a major contributor to the Mimi Arts and Crafts Community Art Centre until her death in 2006. To acknowledge her important artistic contribution to Indigenous art, Mimi Arts and Crafts have partnered with Artback NT, Arts Development and Touring, to present the first major retrospective of this significant artist.

The Yulyurlu Lorna Fencer Napurrurla exhibition features over 60 paintings on paper and canvas, prints and three-dimensional works, drawn mainly from private and several public collections across Australia and overseas.
