Sunshine Coast Council invites the community to celebrate the life of Yulyurlu Lorna Fencer who was part of the vibrant new art movement that began with painting classes at the Lajamanu School in 1986.
Renowned for her strong personality, energy and independent nature, Yulyurlu soon developed her own radical style of painting. Her expressive and colourful works caught the imagination of many collectors and galleries and within a decade she became one of the region’s most sought-after artists.
In 2000 Yulyurlu moved to Katherine where she became a major contributor to the Mimi Arts and Crafts Community Art Centre until her death in 2006. To acknowledge her important artistic contribution to Indigenous art, Mimi Arts and Crafts have partnered with Artback NT, Arts Development and Touring, to present the first major retrospective of this significant artist.
The Yulyurlu Lorna Fencer Napurrurla exhibition features over 60 paintings on paper and canvas, prints and three-dimensional works, drawn mainly from private and several public collections across Australia and overseas.
All art enthusiasts are invited to attend the official launch at 2pm and a curator’s floor talk at 3pm on Saturday 1 December. Bookings are essential by visiting council’s gallery website or by calling the gallery on 5420 8299.
Noosa Regional Gallery is open free to the public, Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm. For further information please call 5449 5340.
The Yulyurlu Lorna Fencer Napurrurla exhibition is touring nationally and is presented with assistance from the Federal Government’s Visions of Australia touring program.
