Construction on the $20 million upgrade of Evans Street in Maroochydore is right on track, with Millwell Road (west) re-opened to traffic ahead of schedule.

The temporary four-month closure of the Millwell Road (west) and Evans Street intersection enabled Council to fast-track extensive civil works.

Division 8 Councillor Jason OPray said the upgrade was one of council’s most significant transport infrastructure projects.

"This much-needed duplication of Evans Street, from two lanes to four, will provide an efficient transport route to the new city centre, and will ease congestion along Evans Street and surrounding roads,” Cr OPray said.

“During the closure of Millwell Road, council constructed a new 3m high retaining wall around Traill Park and new drainage infrastructure, installed new Telstra and Energex services, and laid new road and pedestrian pavements.

“It’s great news that we’ve been able to re-open Millwell Road to traffic ahead of schedule and council thanks the local community for their patience during construction.”

After a brief Christmas break, which will minimise disruption to traffic during the busy December shopping period, council will focus on construction of the new School Road and Evans Street intersection.

Extensive civil work is scheduled from mid-January, which will require a temporary closure of School Road (west) to Evans Street. School Road (west) is expected to re-open to traffic by mid-March 2016 (weather permitting).

Other key tasks scheduled for early 2016 include:

  • Installing new underground power cabling and removing power poles from Maroochydore Road to School Road
  • Completing service work in the south-western corner of the Evans Street and Maroochydore Road intersection
  • Completing kerb and channel and intersection work on the western side of Evans Street
  • Laying new road pavement on the two new western lanes of Evans Street, ready for traffic after Easter 2016.

The Evans Street upgrade, delivered through council’s capital works program, is expected to be completed in early 2017.
