The Sunshine Coast Council’s Brisbane Road Upgrade Project will see the length of road between Culbara Street and Venning Street in Mooloolaba widened to four lanes in multiple stages over a number of years.
Local Division 4 Councillor Thompson said it’s great to know work will soon begin on this important project.
"The upgrade to Brisbane Road will really enhance the entrance of Mooloolaba," Cr Thompson said.
"A staged approach will be used to deliver the upgrade, the first being the duplication of the bridge over Tuckers Creek and its road approaches.
"The new Tuckers Creek Bridge will be built on the eastern side of existing bridge, and will cater for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, with both a shared footpath and a dedicated on-road cycle lane.
"Early construction work is planned to begin in January with Unity Water’s relocation of water and sewer pipes near Tuckers Creek, and Energex will follow soon after to relocate the overhead power lines clearing way for road and bridge works to begin later in 2012."
Major Projects Portfolio Councillor Blumel said through the Brisbane Road Upgrade Project council is not only delivering on the regional economy and jobs, but also helping to create great places to live.
"Mooloolaba plays a major role is driving the Sunshine Coast’s tourism economy," Cr Blumel said.
"A lot of work has gone into the design to date to make sure it helps to create a sense of arrival to the entrance of Mooloolaba, while respecting its village feel.
"Tourists and locals are also well catered for within this pedestrian, bike and bus friendly design."
Cr Thompson said more information on the bridge replacement will be provided before construction begins next year.
"The road connections leading up to the bridge will also be improved with the installation of a temporary signalised intersection at Bindaree Crescent and the relocation of the existing pedestrian crossing," Cr Thompson said.
"The road and bridge construction is expected to begin once all the required approvals have been obtained.
"As the works are located off the existing road alignment, we expect there to be minimal disruption to vehicle and traffic flow and only the occasional disruption to boating activities once construction begins.
"Council will continue to keep the surrounding businesses and community informed, and asks for their patience during this first stage of construction."
The next steps for the four lane upgrade project include:
- continuing negotiations with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and TransLink Transit Authority to determine responsibilities and timeframes for its CoastConnect project (which will utilise the upgraded Brisbane Road).
- developing a design and delivery program for future stages of the project for inclusion in the future capital works program and beyond.
