Local Council RADF grant recipients are featured in the sensitive display of stories and artworks, Of Peace and War, until May 10 at Caloundra Regional Gallery.

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said this culturally significant exhibition of artwork commemorated the Anzac Centenary of the landing at Gallipoli and its meanings.

“This collection of Queensland creativity identifies with both skill and great empathy the real history of loss and longing, pride and duty for individuals in our region,” Cr Dwyer said.

“There are a few local artists of note represented in Of Peace and War including ceramic artist Jan Roebuck (Pelican Waters), Garry Dolan (Kiels Mountain) and Fiona Dempster (Maleny).

“Jan Roebuck has definitively captured many personal images that define who the individual men from this country were.

“This moving and emotional display is achieved through a system of poignant and real photographic and ceramic evidence which have been sealed forever to give the onlooker a glimpse of heartrending nostalgia and truth.

“Jan also produced 100 ceramic poppy pins as a fundraiser for Post-Traumatic Stress support group, ‘Stand Tall for PTS’. Visitors to the exhibition can also purchase their own poppy to add to a wall of remembrance, a tender and moving act for individuals.”

Ceramic artist Jan Roebuck said she resumed potting about five years ago after a 30-year break and was intrigued with the use of photographic decals/prints being transferred and fired onto clay.

“I received a RADF grant from Sunshine Coast Council to work on developing this technique onto raw clay,” she said.

“I started researching images to use in 2014 and would like to acknowledge the Australian War Museum for their wonderful collection.

“The type of clay I selected is a white Raku clay which when fired to 1200c produces a sandstone appearance which works well with the old sepia prints.

“I wanted to concentrate my narrative on the everyday life of the men and women who so gallantly served on Gallipoli, from the excited faces of men leaving our shores to the first Anzac Day in 1916.”
