Time is running out to help Sunshine Coast Council brighten a child’s Christmas by donating a book and giving them the gift of reading.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said this is the fourteenth year that council has organised the Books 4 Kids appeal.

“This program is dear to our hearts as makes a big difference to an underprivileged child’s Christmas by simply donating a book,” Cr McKay said.

“What better present this Christmas than to give the gift of reading – to open a child’s world by escaping into a great book.

“Donations of a new, unwrapped children’s or young adult books can be made at any of council’s library branches until 15 December.

“We then deliver the books to Salvation Army who distribute to children and young adults in need across the region in time for Christmas.

“You can even leave a personalised message with the book which we will add to our message board displayed in the libraries.

“Some of this year’s messages include ‘we hope you have a happy Christmas filled with love and happiness’ by Brooklyn and Savannah and ‘Merry Christmas – hope you enjoy the book’ by Reuben.

“The Sunshine Coast community is renowned for their generosity as we have a total of 148 donated books so far but we are asking the people to help us reach our target of 900 books from last year.”
