Mid-year construction values up $114 million

The latest construction value figures show that development is booming on the Sunshine Coast.

During the October to December 2015 quarter, the Sunshine Coast recorded its highest construction for a December quarter since 2011. These figures, combined with those of the previous quarter, registered an additional $114 million in construction value compared to the same six months of the previous year.

A total of $336 million of building approvals were received and $234 million of new dwellings and new units were approved during the October to December 2015 quarter.

Two major projects with reported construction values of at least $20 million included an aged care facility in Birtinya, with a construction value of $22 million, and 22 units in Mooloolaba, with a construction value of $20 million.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the continuing growth across the region was encouraging.

“Recording a 21% increase in building approvals, and a 34% increase in the construction value of new dwellings in the October to December 2015 quarter, is impressive in itself, but when you combine these results with those of the previous quarter and see the $114 million increase in construction activity, compared to the same period last year, the figures are very reassuring for the future of our region.

“The significant growth in development on the Sunshine Coast over the first six months of 2015/16 is encouraging as ongoing development attracts investment opportunities and generates employment.

“While work continues on the Kawana Health Precinct, the surrounding area has also experienced growth and several projects are now complete, including the 90-place child care centre, Best Western Hotel, the development of 33 detached lots and a precint park, and a 17 lot subdivision on Entrance Island.

“In Maroochydore, the city centre redevelopment, and activity in the surrounding areas, continues with development applications for more than 170 units and several retail premises approved in the October to December quarter, and additional applications for more than 220 dwellings were lodged.

“More accommodation is coming to Mooloolaba, where building approval was received for $30 million of development that will create a total of 89 units.

“Sippy Downs will be re-energised by the introduction of a $13 million Coles supermarket which will bring employment opportunities to the area, both in the construction and operation of the retail premises.

“Significant building approvals were also received in hinterland communities, giving the green light to a $5.6 million short-term accommodation facility and restaurant in Montville, and a nature-based tourism facility and 48 townhouses in Beerwah.

“The number of lots being reconfigured has also increased in the October to December quarter, with the approval of the reconfiguration of 276 lots, and 77 applications for lot reconfiguration received.”
