I recently attended the Dunethin Rock Scout Camp and Water Activities Centre with scout troop members to have a look at how their new ride on mower is making a difference. The mower was purchased through council grants funding and it was clear to see it significantly reduces maintenance time for the camp. While I was there, I was particularly impressed with the Backwards Cooking Competition being held between several scout groups – they did a great job preparing excellent meals on camp fires to be judged by senior scout leaders.
Bli Bli streetscape project update
Council is continuing to progress the Bli Bli streetscape project. We’re working with the owners of the Bli Bli Village and the Quirky Circle site to ensure a seamless integration of various streetscape elements to create softer, more modern ‘look and feel’. Council intends to deliver the streetscape in the 2018-2019 financial year and we’re aiming to have a concept design available for the community to view in early 2018.
We’re also investigating options for the council-owned land on the banks of the Maroochy River, near the bridge (adjacent to the caravan park and Quirky Circle) to create a community open space and a children's kick and throw park. Watch this space for further updates as these investigations progress.
Mosquito treatments
I acknowledge there has been a big mosquito problem in Bli Bli in recent weeks since the rain. In response, council has conducted three aerial sprays in the Bli Bli area to help manage the issue. The treatment targets the larvae to prevent them from developing into adult mozzies. It’s important to note that council doesn’t spray around houses or in public areas to target adult flying mosquitoes. Queensland Health guidelines advise that spraying adult flying mosquitoes would only be considered in the event of a confirmed public health outbreak (e.g. Dengue fever). Meet and greet
At my most recent meet and greet it was great to meet people who were happy with the progress of Bli Bli. Key issues still remain including public transport, traffic congestion delays the Bli Bli bridge. Sunshine Coast Council and I will continue to lobby the State Government on these important community issues. My last ‘meet and greet’ session for the year will be on December 5 at 9-11am outside the Bli Bli IGA.
