Cr Maria Suarez - Thank-you Division 9

Thank you to everyone who supported me to be your local representative for the Sunshine Coast Council Division 9 electorate. I feel very strongly about ensuring your voice is heard at council, and that you are consulted with on decisions that impact you.

It’s been a busy first month of workshops to learn about council processes – but it’s also really important to stay in touch with the community I represent. COVID-19 makes that difficult but I’m talking to people over the phone and working on making it easy for community groups to link to online meetings to discuss their issues. As soon as restrictions lift further, I plan to be at locations convenient to you via a mobile office.

Doorknocking and meeting with residents in Doonan, Weyba Downs, Verrierdale and Peregian Beach recently has given me a good understanding of local issues important to you. These included ensuring development applications are compliant with the town plan and involving the community in consultation projects for a fair and balanced view of community sentiment.

In partnership with Cr Peter Cox, I’ve been allocated to the Environment and Liveability portfolio. On top of representing Division 9, this allows me to be involved with Council proposals, issues and activities relevant to the environment and liveability of the Sunshine Coast, as well as provide input and advice to Council officers on these matters. One of the projects I’m keen to progress is the Blue Heart project.
