Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan to make a difference

In the spirit of reconciliation the Sunshine Coast Council Reconciliation Action Plan 2011-2016 was officially launched today at Kabbarli Home and Community Care Association, Moffat Beach.

Community Policy and Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said in 2011 the council, in partnership with Reconciliation Australia, gave an undertaking to deliver to the community the Sunshine Coast Council Reconciliation Action Plan.

"The plan focuses on enriching relationships, respect and creating opportunities and recognises our responsibility in helping make a difference together," Cr McKay said.

"In developing the principles and performance indicators of the Action Plan, council consulted with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and respected community members to understand the community’s needs.

"Today’s launch is a positive step forward and is a reinforcement of council’s commitment that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will enjoy social and economic opportunities through the values of respect and equality.

"We are committed to working with the Indigenous community to promote reconciliation and today’s launch set these words into action.

"The plan will inform council’s capital infrastructure planning and operational budget commitments."

On behalf of council, Councillor McKay formally acknowledges the support of the Sunshine Coast Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in developing the Reconciliation Action Plan.

"We look forward to implementing the actions outlined in the plan and achieving the targets together with the community," she said.

"The launch of the plan today is an exciting milestone that cements an active partnership between the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, council, State government, other Australians and Reconciliation Australia."
