A major upgrade to a park in Coolum’s civic heart and a historical-themed youth activity precinct and war memorial in Nambour have taken out three Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) awards for council.
The awards were announced at the Queensland Excellence Awards Gala Dinner, held in Brisbane last night, where council was nominated for four awards.
The announcement follows last year’s award for council’s Director Infrastructure Services Andrew Ryan who was named as Queensland Engineer of the Year 2015.
Place Making Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox said the awards recognised the skills of council staff across several teams.
“We were up against some fantastic projects so it is an honour to have won all three awards, especially the award for overall winner,” Cr Cox said.
“These awards show the high standards of council’s infrastructure design and delivery teams.
“It is great recognition of our teams’ abilities to develop and manage construction of outstanding facilities for our communities.”
Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson and Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson were both proud to be involved with planning and delivery of the projects in their respective divisions.
Cr Rogerson said the Nambour Youth Activity Precinct and RSL War Memorial brought together council, the RSL community, youth and the wider community.
“The area is now unrecognisable and is a fantastic asset and precinct for Nambour,” he said.
Cr Robinson said the Coolum project had transformed Jack Morgan Park and the Civic Centre.
“Projects like these make such a difference for those people who use and need them,” he said.
