Council's Disaster Hub website wins state award

Sunshine Coast Council’s innovative Disaster Hub website has been recognised as the Queensland State Winner in the Government Category of the 2016 Resilient Australia Awards.

The Resilient Australia Awards, a national award program held annually by the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department, recognises and promotes initiatives which strengthen community disaster resilience across the nation, making our communities safer, stronger and better prepared to manage any emergency situation.

The awards celebrate innovation and exemplary practice, showcasing work that motivates others to think about how they can be better prepared and more disaster resilient.

Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Chair Mayor Mark Jamieson said Disaster Hub was a great example of the role technology could play in building disaster resilience across all sectors.

“Disaster Hub provides real-time information for the public, our business community, media and external agencies before, during and after disaster events,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Disaster Hub provides advice to help our residents, visitors and businesses prepare for disaster events, and stay up to date with important information such as road closures, weather warnings and breaking news.

“It’s also a critical tool for our Local Disaster Coordination Centre during all types of disasters.

“It allows us to gather intelligence and real time information from numerous sources, which enables us to make decisions very quickly during emergencies and disasters.

“It’s a great asset for our regional disaster operations and it contributes significantly towards a safer and more resilient community.”

The Sunshine Coast will now represent Queensland at the 2016 National Disaster Resilience Awards to be held in Canberra later this year.
