Council snaps up wildlife conservation award

Council has received the 2015 Group Wildlife Conservation Award from the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors at the prestigious Steve Irwin Gala in recognition of its progressive Environment Levy Program.

Sunshine Coast Council has been awarded the 2015 Group Wildlife Conservation Award by the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors at the prestigious Steve Irwin Gala in recognition of its progressive Environment Levy Program.

Deputy Mayor Chris Thompson accepted the award, on behalf of council, in front of 500 guests at the ceremony at Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre on Saturday night.

Cr Thompson said council was excited to have its Environment Levy Program acknowledged and celebrated by one of the largest not-for-profit organisations in Australia.

“To have received such significant recognition from the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors for our focus and investment in our local wildlife further demonstrates our Environment Levy Program is making a difference,” Cr Thompson said.

“One of only four awards, the 2015 Group Wildlife Conservation Award was presented to council in recognition of a whole suite of environmental programs that we deliver.

“Specific projects that were called out included our Koala Conservation Plan, environmental land acquisition program, environmental grants program and volunteer programs such as TurtleCare and Community Nature Conservation.”

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council was extremely proud of the Environment Levy Program and its ongoing achievements.

“Council continues to deliver one of the most successful and progressive environmental programs of any local government in Australia,” Cr McKay said.

“Through the Environment Levy, council has been protecting and enhancing environmentally significant land, delivering on-ground actions, building our knowledge, and engaging and supporting the Sunshine Coast community.

“While being honoured with this prestigious award by the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors is very exciting, it will not distract us from our ultimate purpose of delivering outcomes which assist to protect and enhance our valuable natural assets.”
