Sunshine Coast Council has invested $8.75 million to secure as parkland a significant 3.4 hectare site in the heart of Buderim.

Division Six Councillor Christian Dickson said the purchase represented one of the last opportunities to secure open space and recreational land on the very top of Buderim.

“This is great news for our community and for future generations,” Cr Dickson said.

“The site, which is very close to the school and the village centre, has uninterrupted views over the escarpment and across to Caloundra and Moreton Island.

“It will make one of our region’s most beautiful parks and will be a wonderful complement to the local lifestyle as well as a drawcard for visitors.”

Cr Dickson said planning for the district recreational park would start as soon as settlement on the purchase was complete.

Division Seven Councillor Ted Hungerford said the 3.4 hectares represented the majority of the site owned by Kingsbridge Group.

“It includes a large area of flat open space with frontage and exposure to King and Church Streets, as well as the area along the escarpment,’’ he said.

“Council’s Public Park Strategy had identified the site as having excellent potential for a district park and, of course, many people in our community made it clear that they wanted it protected for the future.

“This purchase reflects council’s commitment to engaging with our residents and ratepayers to achieve good outcomes.”

Council will continue to work with the Kingsbridge Group, who plan to develop the area of the site retained by them, to ensure development outcomes complement the future open space and recreational land.
