Work on Council’s $20 million Evans Street Upgrade remains on track with construction about to ramp up on the Millwell Road/Evans Street intersection.
The intersection is being upgraded from a roundabout to a signalised intersection and significant earth and civil works, which require closure of Millwell Road (west), will start from mid-August.
Division 8 Councillor Jason OPray said the work required to construct the new intersection was extensive and would require Millwell Road (west) to be closed.
“A temporary closure of Millwell Road (west) onto Evans Street will be required from week beginning August 10, and the road is expected to be reopened before Christmas (weather permitting),” Cr OPray said.
“A retaining wall along the western side of Evans Street will be constructed for the new intersection, and new Telstra and Energex services installed.
“This will be followed by installation of new drainage infrastructure, new electrical conduits for signals and new road pavements.”
All motorists, pedestrians and cyclists who usually access Evans Street via Millwell Road (west) will be detoured along School Road. This detour route will be clearly signed.
Cr OPray said the project team had investigated a number of construction options to minimise the impact on the local community.
“This temporary closure will cause the least amount of disruption to the local community and commuters, as opposed to intermittent closures that could extend the project,” Cr OPray said.
“Council acknowledges there will some inconvenience during the temporary closure and thanks motorists and nearby residents and businesses for their patience during construction.”
The Evans Street Upgrade involves the duplication of Evans Street from Maroochydore Road to Plaza Parade from two lanes to four, two new signalised intersections at School Road and Millwell Road East and u-turn facilities at School Road and Maroochydore Road.
The area’s visual amenity will be substantially improved through landscaping and art installations that celebrate the area’s local character and history.
The project forms part of Council’s $114 million 2014/2015 capital works program and is one of the biggest projects undertaken by Sunshine Coast Council.
Construction started in April this year and is expected to be complete in early 2017.
