Community input needed on treatment plant upgrade

Sunshine Coast Regional Council is seeking community input on a proposed upgrade of the Cooroy Waste Water Treatment Plant, Manager Water and Sewerage for Council's Northern Division Jeff Steel said today.

“A recent review of the treatment plant identified the need to upgrade the facility so that it can meet its environmental licence and water quality objectives,” Mr Steel said.

The water quality objectives are designed to maintain or improve water quality and protect environmental values, such as aquatic ecosystems or recreation uses.”

Mr Steel said Council has commissioned a study to be completed by consultants GHD to assess the potential reuse of treated wastewater in the Cooroy area, conduct an environmental assessment and provide a planning study to accommodate an upgraded facility.

Council will then consider the most appropriate design to support increased capacity at the treatment plant of approximately 2 megalitres per day and apply for a new Development Approval and government subsidy for the upgrade.

“In the coming months there will be a number of community activities to seek feedback from Cooroy residents and local businesses on the upgrade and aspects of the design,” Mr Steel said.

These activities will include community workshops, individual meetings and a Community Information Day.

“These activities are designed to provide information on the purpose of the upgrade and scope of the preliminary study and to document issues or ideas from the community,” he said.
