Chancellor Lake 6 set for comprehensive clean up

Fifteen years of sediment is set to be removed from Chancellor Lake 6 as part of a comprehensive cleanup by Sunshine Coast Council.

Following on from the previous remedial works undertaken in Chancellor Lakes 7 and 8, council is set to start a six month overhaul of Lake 6.

Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson said water would soon be drained from the lake in preparation for the project.

"This is a continuation of council’s commitment to clean up and correct the Chancellor Lakes," he said.

"Due to the volume of water in Lake 6 being too large for the size of the catchment, it has reached its sediment and nutrient storage capacity and has experienced enormous and problematic growth of aquatic plants and filamentous algae.

"Council will drain water from the lake downstream and remove 15 years worth of sediment build up before resetting the lake bed in a way that will ensure these problems do not re-occur.

"Appropriate vegetation will also be planted in and around the lake’s edge to enhance water quality in the future."

During the six month project all lake sediment will be removed via Springhill Drive to Bellflower Road where it will be stockpiled. Council will engage a street sweeper to regularly service Springhill Drive and Bellflower Road to ensure the streets are clean during construction works.

Works will be undertaken to relocated wildlife to the lower lakes and silenced pumps will be used to reduce the impact on nearby residents. A temporary pathway will be set up at the back of the lake during construction.

During construction, property access may be affected for short durations. Council officers will contact residents, where relevant, to discuss timing for access or parking if works are likely to block entrances. Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.
