“Today, it gives me pleasure to announce Council and Sunshine Coast Destination Limited have secured the prestigious four-day Uhlsport Champion of Champions event,” Cr O’Pray said.

“The good news just keeps getting better for football fans as Council has also provided a grant in support of the Champion of Champions tournament to ensure the event remains at the Sunshine Coast Stadium for the next three years.

“This partnership has also enabled the Brisbane Roar to play Central Coast Mariners on Saturday, September 26 with the senior men's Sunshine Coast Select XI playing the Football Brisbane Select XI prior.

“This event provides further confirmation of Sunshine Coast Stadium and Kawana Sports Precinct being the destination of choice in regional Queensland and comes hot on the heels of recent camps held at the venue by the Wallabies and Melbourne Storm.

“It complements other upcoming events such as the recent National Youth Touch Football Championship and the upcoming Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) match in October.”

Football Brisbane CEO Mike Quarmby said the Champion of Champions was developed so the best of the best grassroots players in their zones get the chance to play the best of the best in other zones.

“It is also used for the development of up and coming referees who will benefit by having qualified assessors conduct workshops each night on their performances during the day,” Mr Quarmby said.

Uhlsport Champion of Champions has a new format this year with six zones competing -Football Brisbane, Football Gold Coast, Football SWQ, Sunshine Coast Football have been joined by Football Central Queensland and Football Wide Bay.

The tournament is set to kick off on Friday, September 25 with the finals to be played on September Sunday, 27 and Monday, 28 September. Entry to the Champion of Champions tournament is free.

Football fans can also purchase general admission tickets to the Brisbane Roar v Central Coast Mariners match on Saturday, September 26 for just $10 per adult, $5 for concessions and children 15 years and under by visiting Sunshine Coast Stadium’s website or Facebook to purchase tickets.

Gates open at 3pm with the Brisbane Select versus Sunshine Coast Select kicking off at 4pm before the main game at 7pm.
